What does it mean to be an eco-friendly builder?

Finding eco-friendly builder can be a difficult task, but as consumer-awareness about environmentally friendly building has increased, so has the demand and availability of eco-friendly and energy efficient home builders. Homeowners have discovered that not only is building green a way to help protect the environment, but it is also more cost-efficient than building a traditional home. By building green, homeowners can save money on materials, utility bills once the home is built, and energy efficient appliances.

Factors to Consider

While many builders may promise to be “green”, it can be difficult to ascertain how green a builder really is, just by talking to them or checking their company website. For this reason, there are various green building certification programs in place to ensure green building practices are followed. At Hasler Homes Ltd we have been working with Built Green Canada. Their program encourages the use of advanced building technologies, helping the home work as a system, or a sum of its parts. You can also check out our Environmental Policy Statement to see more of how we ensure our eco friendly construction services.

Materials Used

When we are working with clients and designers in designing a home we always emphasize using quality materials from local companies as much as possible. We understand that the investment of building a new home can be daunting, so spending extra thousands on a countertop may not be your first choice but when you do, you won’t regret it. Investing in items like durable countertops, well-made tiles, hardwood flooring means that you can truly live in your home and as it ages, it won’t need replacing from that daily use.

We also source products that made from recyclable materials whenever possible. Most companies are doing their part to make these materials more common so they don’t cost much more than non-recycled materials.

Ensure Proper Disposal

When you are working to run an eco-friendly construction site, disposal of waste material is crucial. Over the years we have developed an in-house recycling program because of course, construction projects result in a lot of waste of varying types. It’s important to us that we don’t just throw everything in one bin and trash it. Instead when we begin a project, we set up a recycling station. This includes a place for metal, plastic, cardboard, scrap wood, green waste, and drywall. Throughout the duration of the project as we bring trades on site, we ask them to use the recycling station as well. It’s important that they are part of our efforts.

Our driver looks after our recycling station and takes care of dropping off recyclables to the proper stations. This is the majority of what we recycle: wood; dimensional lumber; foam; blue ICF foam; gypssum/drywall; plastic wrap; hard plastic; asphalt; concrete; metal; green waste/branches/stumps; rubble/grass/rock/dirt.

In turn we also source things like aggregate and dirt from recycling stations when a project requires them.

Be Accountable

The most important part. At every step of the construction process, our crew must be accountable for prioritizing eco-friendly practices. To maintain the integrity of a green construction site, we must make sure everyone is involved. That means suppliers, contractors, equipment operators, are all on the same page when it comes to maintaining an eco friendly construction site.
