BONE Structure steel construction technology takes the idea of post-and-beam, replaces wood with steel, and then integrates energy efficient solutions for the thermal envelope. By doing this, BONE Structure Homes are built ready to become BuiltGreen, Passive House, LEED, and even NetZero. This also makes BC’s updated Energy StepCode for new builds much more easily attainable. So does this mean we’re tossing wood to the curb?

Steel vs Wood

Other than changing the material we are using for this specific project, the progression of building is not extremely different. Of course with BONE Structure, there are benefits. The process of putting together the pre-fabricated steel structure is efficient. It also eliminates most of the risk of human error. It also eliminates the problems that some wooden framed homes have. That being said, we have no plans on abandoning the current way we typically build our homes. It is however good to know that we have options. With the way BC is evolving their building policies, one day that may change. At the moment, it’s nice to be challenged with a new building material but good to know that we already are building quality homes.

For Team Hasler,

the building envelope is the most integral part of a homes longevity no matter what material we are using.  it is what will protect your wooden framed home from things like: mold, deterioration, insects, shrinkage, swelling, etc. At Hasler, steel OR wood, we use building techniques to ensure that the envelope is airtight. When it comes to sealing the envelope of a steel structured home though, it is slightly easier to achieve. Either way, building homes that have no air leaks in them is the Hasler standard.

Building the Future?

Now, to answer the question of whether we think BONE Structure is the future of home building, thats something we will have to see. We are so excited to have the opportunity to work on this BONE Structure project with our clients. We can’t wait to share the finished home with you. The process of assembling the steel structure has gone smoothly and is very straightforward. Greg and Team Hasler definitely hope to build more BONE Structure homes in our future.
