Reducing Ecological Footprints, One Passive House at a Time
As you saw in our previous blog, Road to Passivhaus, last year we begun taking courses to learn how to become a more energy efficient and high performance builder. In the past six months we have become members of and started training for our first BuiltGreen Home. Greg has also become Passive House Canada certified and completed Net Zero Builder Training. We also took the steps to find an Energy Consultant that we will look to for guidance as well as administrating blower door tests.
In addition, we have also begun researching energy efficient product lines, such as SIGA. Siga is a Swiss manufacturer of high performance tapes and membranes that create airtight and weathertight building envelopes. Another high performance product, ThermoDrain, is a creatively designed drain water heat recovery system. These are just a few of the products that we have found, and from what we are seeing, there’s more being invented all the time now.
To say that we have a ways to go is an understatement. Now that the B.C. Government has implemented a new StepCode, we are happy to already be ahead of the game and help pave the way for other builders to follow suit. Eventually it should be the local industry’s standard to build high performance homes. Greg, our owner, and Adam, one of our head foremen, recently attended Passive House Tradesperson Training with BCIT. Here are a few pictures of them learning about building envelopes, and high performance window installations.
Below is four different ways of assembling a wall according to Passive House standards.
