What is The Edible Garden Project?

The Edible Garden Project is a way to connect children to there food and the community. The goal of this program is to teach the children the cycle of food production from seed to soil. They grow the food, harvest the food, prepare it, and enjoy it. We love the concept of this. It shows children and adults alike how the plant to plate local food system can work.

Community

Hasler Homes does work throughout Vancouver but our little community of Lynn Valley is where we spend most of our time as a family. We love giving back wherever possible, but it’s especially nice when we can give back in our own backyard. Namely, The Hasler Boys elementary school. Recently the Lynn Valley Elementary PAC contacted us about a program they are helping the school with, The Edible Garden Program. In order to get this program going the school needed seven good sized planter boxes. Team Hasler took turns working on the side of another project to get these done. We can’t wait to see the program launch next school year!

Loutet Farm

Another project by The North Shore Neighbourhood House, and where the EGP stems from. The goal of the farm has always been to provide an economical viable urban farm within the residential community of North Vancouver. Since opening years ago and getting the gardens going with viable produce, the goal has been to generate funds through the sale of that produce. Then they take the funds and redirect them back into the farm. They provide events and education for the community, as well as creating green collared jobs for North Shore residents. The big picture goal was to get Loutet Farm to be a sustainable social enterprise that facilitates social, environmental, economic and educational benefits for the community, and they definitely are succeeding. They also love volunteers so if you’re interested in learning more or lending a hand, sign up here.
